WEATHER
CONDITIONS
Weather conditions: |
| Snow cover reduced to 50% on 10 June and completely melted on 16 June. This year was slightly early, but not nearly so atypical as 2001. There was still a great deal of snow on the ground when the shorebirds arrived. With the exception of the usual wind/rain storm at the end of June (23rd-25th), there were no extreme weather events with an adverse affect on the birds.

BIOTIC
CONDITIONS
| Rodents abundance evaluation: |
low
Breeding conditions:
| This was a somewhat early year with low lemming numbers and poor breeding success. The density of some shorebirds was lower than in previous years, perhaps due in part to poor breeding success in 2001. The decline in density from 2000-2002 was particularly pronounced for Red Phalaropes, a species thought to roam widely between breeding seasons. Mayfield estimate of hatch success in shorebirds was 0.26, and hatching success in Sabine's Gulls was 20%.

Rodent dynamics:
| Lemmings were at a low in this year.

Rodent species recorded:
| Latin | Abundance |
| Lemmus trimucronatus | rare |
| Dicrostonyx groenlandicus | rare |

Summary
of fauna studies: |
| In 2002 we conducted detailed studies of Herring Gulls, Sabine's Gulls and shorebirds. All parameters of basic breeding ecology were recorded, such as nest success, nesting densities, timing of peak lay and hatch, etc.
